CHICAGO — Police recorded 41 shooting victims and three murders during the final weekend of August, according to preliminary statistics released Monday morning.
Chicago recorded fewer shooting incidents than during the corresponding weekend last year, but dramatically more victims.
CPD reported 22 shooting incidents and 41 shooting victims, compared with 25 incidents and 27 victims in 2025 a 12% decline in shooting incidents but a 51.9% surge in people shot.
The concentration of victims per shooting also increased sharply.
In 2025, CPD recorded approximately 1.08 shooting victims per incident. In 2026, that increased to approximately 1.86 victims per incident about 72% higher.
CPD counted violence occurring between 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30:

Shooting-victim count includes both fatal and nonfatal victims.
Weekend included the mass shooting in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, where police said 15 people were shot, including a 35-year-old man who died.
Officers were already at a gathering attempting to disperse the crowd when unknown offenders began firing, according to CPD.
Official numbers also show a sharp year-over-year increase.
