One person was killed and 13 others were wounded when a gunman—or gunmen—opened fire on a crowd in Washington Park on Saturday night, Chicago police said.
Officers were already on scene working to disperse a large gathering around 11:37 p.m. when an unknown attacker or attackers began firing into the crowd, according to police.
35-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the other victims, ranging in age from 21 to 47, were taken to area hospitals.
Most of the wounded were listed in good or fair condition. A 47-year-old woman was in serious condition, and the conditions of three others, ages 23, 35 and 37, were not immediately known.
No officers were hurt.
Detectives are investigating, and did not officially say whether anyone had been arrested.
Report from police radio indicated that someone may have been detained when the incident was unfolding, but this is unconfirmed, as is another radio report stating that a weapon was recovered.

The incident occurred in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, making it the city’s largest shooting of the year.
Several large gatherings were happening in the park, including a reunion picnic for former residents of the Robert Taylor Homes.
Around 11:30 p.m., Chicago Police officers were on the scene attempting to disperse the crowd when gunfire erupted.
Sources indicate two unknown shooters dressed in all-black clothing and ski masks fired into the crowd from across the street. Someone inside the park reportedly returned fire.
Investigators recovered 10 .40-caliber shell casings across the street and 26 additional casings including rifle rounds inside the park.
35-year-old man, identified by the medical examiner as Rontonio M. Guterz, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Injured Victims:
14 additional people ranging in age from 21 to 47 were wounded
47-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition, while the remaining victims were listed in fair-to-good condition.
As of August 31, 2026, no arrests have been announced, and Chicago Police Area detectives are continuing to investigate the motive.

Two masked suspects reportedly fired from across the street before return fire was initiated from the park, with over 30 shell casings recovered at the scene.
Thirty-five-year-old Rontonio M. Guterz was killed, and 14 others aged 21 to 47 were injured and treated at local hospitals.
No suspects are in custody as Area One detectives investigate. A reward of up to $10,000 is offered through Cook County Crime Stoppers, and Mayor Brandon Johnson pledged trauma and mental health support for affected families.
Shooting is now tied for second-worst in Chicago since HeyJackass recordkeeping began in 2013.
