Chicago’s Violence Reduction Dashboard displayed extraordinary changes during the final weekend of August.
On Aug. 29, the dashboard showed 1,255 shooting victimizations year to date.
On Aug. 30, the displayed total fell to 1,000 — 255 victims disappearing from the published count in a single day.
On Aug. 31, the number jumped back to 1,272.
The same thing happened with nonfatal shooting victimizations:
Aug. 29: 1,001
Aug. 30: 746 — down 255
Aug. 31: 1,017 — up 271
An even more dramatic change appeared in multi-victim shooting incidents:
Aug. 29: 173
Aug. 30: 17 — down 156
Aug. 31: 174 — up 157
Those are not changes that can be explained simply by another day passing in a year-to-date dataset.
Cumulative YTD count ordinarily should not lose hundreds of previously counted victimizations without a major revision, change in filtering or data problem.
Aug. 30 dashboard also showed 15,695 total violent-crime victimizations, compared with 15,877 on Aug. 29 apparently 182 fewer victimizations despite the reporting period advancing by a day.
By Aug. 31, the displayed count had risen to 16,039.
The Question for City Hall
Why did hundreds of previously displayed crime victimizations disappear from Chicago’s public dashboard on Aug. 30 and then reappear the following day?
Until the city explains whether this resulted from a dashboard error, data refresh, filtering problem, methodology change, correction or something else, the screenshots document an unexplained alteration in the statistics presented to the public.
And Aug. 30 was not an insignificant date.
It fell during a weekend when CPD ultimately reported 41 shooting victims, including the 15-victim Cottage Grove mass shooting.
