Chicago’s first full weekend of June delivered another reminder that crime statistics only tell part of the story.
Using the official HeyJackAss weekend methodology, Chicago recorded 4 killed and 23 wounded between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.
Compared to the same weekend in 2025, homicides increased 33.3%, non-fatal shooting victims increased 130%, and total shooting victims increased 107.7%.
Those numbers alone would make this one of the more violent weekends of 2026.
The broader reality was even worse.
A review of shootings, major incidents, police notifications, Citizen alerts, and public reports from Friday through Monday morning found 34 people shot, six of them fatally.
The official comparison excludes the seven-victim Wood Street mass shooting because it occurred before the traditional Friday noon start of the HeyJackAss reporting period.
Including that incident raises the broader tally to 34 shot and six killed.
The official weekend tally increased compared to last year.
The broader reality increased even more.
Four separate mass shootings erupted across the city. Nine victims were between the ages of 12 and 19.
The violence stretched across Back of the Yards, Grand Boulevard, South Shore, Chatham, Greater Grand Crossing, Auburn Gresham, Englewood, East Garfield Park, Belmont Cragin, Austin, North Lawndale, Lincoln Park, the Near South Side, and downtown.
One of the largest attacks occurred shortly after midnight Friday in Back of the Yards, where seven people were shot and two later died.
Yet for residents living through the violence, the bullets arrived all the same.
The city would go on to record four mass shootings during the period covered in this report.
- Four boys between the ages of 12 and 14 were wounded in Grand Boulevard.
- Three people were shot near 46th and Federal.
- Triple shooting occurred in Englewood early Monday morning.
Among the victims were teenagers and young adults just beginning their lives.
- 18-year-old male was killed in Greater Grand Crossing.
- Two 18-year-olds were shot in Englewood.
- 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman were wounded near 46th and Federal.
- 19-year-old woman was shot near Michigan Avenue on the Near South Side.
Violence was not limited to shootings.
Downtown, a reported sexual assault near State and Lake evolved into an unwanted contact investigation involving four people.
Detectives revised the case multiple times before ultimately determining that only one person suffered a laceration.
Traffic violence claimed another life when Riley O’Neil, a 35-year-old Chicago Department of Transportation planner and bicycle safety advocate, was killed in Bridgeport after reportedly striking an opened vehicle door and falling beneath a semi-truck.
Hours later, a 96-year-old driver suffered a medical emergency and crashed into a building on South Pulaski, injuring five people, including a 2-year-old child.
Throughout the weekend, residents watching Citizen alerts, scanner traffic, and public live feeds repeatedly asked the same question:
Where are the violence interrupters?
Police cars, ambulances, detectives, and crime scene tape were easy to find. Violence intervention teams were not.

The broader tally shows something more troubling.
Even before Monday’s workweek began, four mass shootings, six homicides, dozens of gunshot victims, teenage victims, a fatal bicycle crash, and multiple other violent incidents had already unfolded across the city.
