During the week of July 20 through July 26, Chicago recorded nine murders, compared with three during the same week in 2025, according to the Chicago Police Department’s Week 30 Public Safety Report.
Shooting incidents rose from 32 to 41, a 28% increase, while total reported crime fell 23%, from 2,124 to 1,639.
The latest numbers tell two very different stories. Overall crime is down. The city’s deadliest violence moved sharply in the opposite direction.
Figures show Chicago’s most serious violence moved sharply higher.
Last 7 Days
- Murders: 9 vs. 3 (+200%)
- Shooting incidents: 41 vs. 32 (+28%)
- Total crime: 1,639 vs. 2,124 (-23%)
The latest numbers mark a sharp break from the opening weeks of 2026, when Chicago appeared on pace for one of its safest years in decades.
During that period, murders were running more than 70% below the previous year’s pace.
That historic lead steadily eroded through the spring and early summer before disappearing almost entirely.
By Week 30, the erosion was complete.
The Chicago Police Department’s Week 30 report shows murders are now up 2% year to date compared with the same period in 2025.
Chicago has recorded 245 murders so far this year, compared with 240 at the same point in 2025, a 2% increase.
Shooting incidents have also given up their earlier gains, with 818 so far in 2026 versus 816 during the same period last year, effectively returning to even after months of narrowing declines.
Total crime remains slightly lower year to date, with 53,611 reported offenses compared with 54,741 in 2025, a 2% drop.

Shorter-term trends are still better than last year, but that advantage continues to shrink.

- Total crime: 7,245 vs. 8,678 (-17%)
Overall reported crime remains 2% lower year to date, but the report shows Chicago’s most serious violence has largely returned to last year’s levels despite:
- $100 million Office of Gun Violence Reduction
- Specialized police deployments
- Intervention programs
- Public safety announcements
During the last 28 days, murders were 19% lower than the same period in 2025, while shooting incidents were down 13%.
Both declines are substantially smaller than those reported earlier this year, continuing the steady erosion of Chicago’s early gains.
Week 30 marks another milestone in that reversal.
The substantial reductions seen during the opening months of 2026 have largely vanished, leaving Chicago’s murder and shooting trends tracking above where they stood one year ago.
Looking further back, total reported crime is still 5% higher than it was at this point in 2022.
The data has changed dramatically over the past six months.
