Chicago’s showcase corridor collapsed in a single day.
It started with smashed Rolex windows on Michigan and Huron and ended with a homicide at Smoke Valley on South Michigan.
In between came boarded storefronts, overdoses, Roosevelt assaults, a GameStop smash-and-grab, a tent camp, a kidnapping call, and finally a man shot in the head.
Downtown itself carried the story.
Rolex Smash-and-Grab
On Michigan and Huron in the afternoon of September 5, 2025, the day cracked open with scanner traffic: 701 North Michigan, a call of criminal damage to property in progress, armed robbery, smash and grab. Six males wearing ski masks, armed with axes. Six males wearing ski masks, armed with axes.
The Rolex Boutique’s arched windows facing Huron Street had been smashed out. The crew never went inside — they swung axes and hammers into the glass, reached through, and pulled out watches worth more than $260,000.
One Rolex still hung from its tether through the broken frame.
There was shooting here.
Street reporters pointed it out: the Rolex hanging right there in the window — a picture of the chaos left behind. Detectives crowded looking at the broken remains, piecing together how six masked men had blown through the glass. Four were already caught in Englewood, while two were still running loose.
It looked like something out of a movie — a robbery crew in a stolen car tearing across the city, past plate readers and patrols, with gunfire, smash-and-grabs, and a high-speed chase ending miles from the Mag Mile.
The red Nissan SUV carried the offenders south. They went all the way down to 61st and Bishop. Four in custody on the South Side. Six total were eventually caught. Police clarified that the suspects fired shots during the attempted robbery.
The framing was direct: why aren’t police preventing these crimes instead of just standing around while luxury stores are smashed open?
Police reports later labeled it burglary. On the avenue, it was a broad-daylight smash-and-grab with shots fired, a high-speed chase, and luxury glass shattered into the street — on a Friday afternoon in the middle of the rush.
Boarded Mag Mile Walk
South on Michigan Avenue after the Rolex smash-and-grab, the city’s showcase strip showed its true state.
Whole buildings stood empty. Grand Lux, once a landmark restaurant, boarded up like a foreclosure.
Storefronts at Ontario and Michigan were covered in plywood. A third stood empty, with a man sleeping in the doorway. The same homeless figures sit in front of stores every day, watching, as if working with the criminals.
Each day someone is posted there — begging, stealing, selling drugs. This is supposed to be a commercial district, yet one man had even set up a full bed on Michigan Avenue.
The so-called Magnificent Mile is starting to look like skid row — hollowed out, reduced to plywood and squatters.
Loop Disorder & Overdoses
As the Mag Mile slipped downhill, scanners carried theft from a freight train at 200 E. 95th, assaults inside a 7-Eleven at Belmont, a burglary at 1232 W. 97th, and a firearms investigation on Oakley.
The calls kept coming while the Loop itself collapsed.
EMS lifted an overdose victim onto a stretcher as drug dealing continued feet away at Dearborn and Van Buren.
An overdose was unfolding as dealers worked the corner. Somebody dumped a batch of drugs into the city — overdoses were everywhere.
The sense of lawlessness extended to police encounters.
On State Street, officers cuffed men, ran their names, and then let them walk away. Not everyone in handcuffs went to jail.
Cops stood around doing nothing, while the city burned.
Downtown Chicago showed in real time how disorder, overdoses, and official inaction had become the new normal.
Roosevelt Corridor
By evening, the Roosevelt strip joined the collapse. Scanner traffic called out a disturbance on the Red Line platform — heavy drug activity happening there.
Canal and Roosevelt carried its own memory of blood: a kid was murdered here during the waves of smash-and-grabs and chaos when Brandon Johnson had just been elected.
The night before, multiple fights and criminal events played out despite a Cook County Sheriff’s satellite office sitting smack in the middle of the drug-dealing spot.
GameStop Smash-and-Grab
Canal and Roosevelt, 6:48 pm, the scanners had already carried overdoses, CTA fights, and the Rolex smash-and-grab.
GameStop had been smashed earlier that morning. By the time evening came, the window was already boarded — plywood sealed over the damage.
Another blow to the South Loop.
The Sears Tower loomed in the background while memories of past bloodshed lingered — a 14- or 15-year-old was murdered in this same parking lot during the teen trends and riots that erupted when Brandon Johnson first took office.
How can you run a business when you get prepared for a Friday and you want people to come into your store, and then your store gets smashed in?
This is what happens in our city. Its all right here — stealing, thieving, smashing.
How much does it cost to replace one of these windows? How much did they steal? How much is crime costing Chicago?
These crimes aren’t just theft, they’re a form of urban terrorism. If it happens more than once, and it happens daily, then it’s not about stealing — it’s about terrorizing.
People that live around here are terrorized, and businesses are terrorized.
We need to start being honest with ourselves that this is not a normal way a city should be. And if we look all over the city, there’s plywood everywhere.
Ruble Street Tent City
Ruble Street once held a full tent encampment on the street curb. It has now been cleared, pushed under the Dan Ryan viaduct closer to 14th and Union — less than a block from UIC campus housing.
The relocation came when the DNC arrived.
The city spent a million dollars on a fence and brought in the National Guard, forcing people out from Ruble Street.
The sweep only shifted the problem.
The same crowd is still here, aggressive, hanging out by the viaduct, some dealing drugs right behind dumpsters.
They keep moving them, but they don’t fix it. Two, three years of the same cycle.
A million dollars went into a fence for appearances, when the same money could have converted a warehouse into a shelter.
Instead, the fence went up, the camp moved a few blocks, and the people remain homeless years later.

Amid the downtown collapse, scanner traffic stacked up from across the city.

The scanner kept moving, each incident logged and lost in the noise of a city unraveling.

But while scanners kept spitting out calls from every corner of the city — shootings, stabbings, burglaries, kidnappings — downtown carried its own finale.
The city, already shattered by smash-and-grabs and boarded storefronts, ended the night with a business-related killing.
Security Homicide
The day closed on Michigan Avenue itself — a homicide at Smoke Valley, 1319 South Michigan, around 9:28 p.m.
Scanner traffic came first: person shot in the head at Smoke Valley, fighting with the security guard over his gun. SWAT rolling. Moments later the update followed: disregard looking for an offender, security is the offender, SWAT can take a disregard.
On the street the picture was already forming. A 31-year-old man argued with a 32-year-old employee. The altercation turned physical, the employee drew a firearm, and during the struggle the gun went off. The man was hit in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
The guard was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. A second ambulance was also called for him. Observers noted a white Tesla parked parallel to the shooting that may have captured video.
The questions of murder, manslaughter, or self-defense will be left for the courts. But on the ground it was simple: the same avenue that began the day with a Rolex dangling from smashed glass ended it with a man dead in a hookah lounge.
From Smash to Homicide
One street carried the cycle. Michigan and Huron blown open in the afternoon. South Michigan ending in homicide by night.
Between those points: plywood, overdoses, Roosevelt assaults, GameStop smashed, tent encampments, a kidnapping call.
Downtown itself told the truth.
Crime is down? This is what “down” looks like in the middle of the day.
