Picture … Wons Auto Werks overhead door at 1661 N. Milwaukee in Bucktown — blocked by concrete bike lanes, leaving the business cut off from the street. Residents have compared such city designs to political retribution against small businesses. 1116 p.m. July 10th 2025 1661 North Milwaukee Bucktown by John Kugler SubXnews
Thursday laid bare the stark reality of Chicago’s open market chaos: drug dealers operating with impunity, addicts collapsing in public, and criminals moving unhindered through the CTA, while legitimate businesses are barricaded, boarded, and blocked by politically motivated bike lanes.
Morning Mayhem: Grand & McClurg to Lake Shore Drive
The day began at Grand & McClurg, where a man threw objects at Yolk employees, harassing staff and disrupting business. Hours later, the CTA Red Line at 35th was shut down after a gun detection system flagged a man with a gold-colored handgun. Police swarmed, but this now-familiar theater failed to address the ongoing lawlessness on trains and platforms.
A working fire broke out inside a closet at 2014 N. Clifton. A car collided with a motorcycle at Western & Pershing, one of the city’s most dangerous intersections. Traffic snarled along Lake Shore Drive near the museum campus despite no serious damage at the scene.
On I-294 near 95th, police chased a stolen white Honda Accord before giving up. Northbound Columbus at Illinois became blocked during rush hour by a CTA bus that continued operating as a rolling urban flow disruption.
Downtown Drug Dealing, Dystopia and Corruption
Heading into the downtown core, the open market came into full view. Drug dealers worked the sidewalks in front of businesses, standing right outside doorways, scanning for commuters and tourists. They operated openly in daylight, trading product in plain sight as pedestrians hurried by.
A man screamed incoherently outside the Cultural Center on Randolph, in the heart of the downtown tourist area a block from Millennium Park and the Bean. He staggered, shouted, and collapsed, then jumped up yelling — a vivid display of downtown despondency.
Another example of the city’s dysfunction surfaced at LaSalle and Polk.
Illegal political signs — crudely printed, intentionally ragged, and plastered on public property — bore the name of a company called TSI, along with the phone number 630-497-3478. These poorly made posters, looked designed to provoke rather than persuade.
Their presence raised more questions about who ordered them, what political purpose they served, and why violations of city codes are tolerated so openly in Chicago’s streets.
Further south, the South Loop’s “The 78” project raises significant community displacement concerns. This $7 billion development — featuring a proposed Chicago Fire stadium and exclusive soccer practice area — is being built on public land transferred to private developers, supported by up to $700 million in tax-increment financing (TIF) subsidies.
As Belt Magazine highlights, the project moved forward with little resident input, displacing working people, minorities, and the poor to make way for a curated influx of affluent residents.
The pattern echoes the Robert Taylor Homes, where the XS Tennis Village, a state-of-the-art facility, now occupies former public housing land. Plans by owner Kamau Murray to build 39 two-flats and townhomes for tennis employees on this site — still awaiting federal approval — have sparked resistance from housing activists, who vow to fight for the return of displaced residents.
Plywood and Violence
Commuters at Grand & Halsted found a doped-up vagrant planted in front of a storefront, harassing everyone who passed, demanding money, and blocking the door during the evening rush.
North on the Chicago River near New City the former Cabrini Green Projects , the plywood boarded-up storefronts were hard to miss.
Even the high-end canoe shop couldn’t make it — a “plywood special,” bankrupt and empty despite millions invested to cater to the elite.
Nearby, Uncle Julio’s — another prime-location restaurant — sat shuttered, a casualty of what some residents called economic terrorism and gentrification.
The plywood and closed storefronts continued up the corridor, remnants of failed businesses and disinvestment in what was once a thriving retail area.
In other parts of the city, a 17-year-old girl was shot in the thigh while sitting in her home at 7643 S. Lowe after a bullet passed through her window. Teens were spotted riding a rental scooter down the Kennedy Expressway shoulder. A silent alarm tripped on a bus at 2404 W. Chicago. A white tow truck driver fired two shots while driving on I-94 near 55th.
Riverdale police pursued a Dodge Charger that crashed near 142nd & Paxton. Gunfire erupted at 5422 S. Kilbourn.
The CTA saw continued violence: a woman harassed on the Green Line at Roosevelt, a man collapsed at the Howard station needing EMS, another exposed himself at Randolph.
Sluggers bar on Clark was hit with a strong-arm robbery by three suspects, followed minutes later by three more suspects breaking into an abandoned parking lot at 327 S. Plymouth — most likely Venezuelan drug addicts, given the location directly across from the former Standard Club migrant shelter and their continued drug dealing in the area.
Drugs First, Businesses Last
On Milwaukee Avenue in Bucktown, the city’s war on businesses became evident when bike lanes and concrete curb barriers blocked the overhead door of an auto shop at 1661 N. Milwaukee.
Residents compared these city actions to political retribution in authoritarian regimes — deliberate, vindictive, and economically destructive.
The night ended at Central & Lake, where the wasteland was undeniable. A man lay draped over a railing, motionless; others shot up drugs in the rain, stumbling through the darkness, using the nearby park as an open-air drug den, clogging sidewalks and park facilities with no city services in sight.
Here, the streets belonged to the dealers, the users, and the predators — while businesses were left to die behind barricades and empty slogans.
Chicago appears to prefer illegal activity over protecting and growing law-abiding, tax-paying businesses — rewarding dealers, vandals, and vagrants while choking out those who play by the rules.
This is Chicago now: a city where drug markets thrive, criminals ride the trains, addicts harass and intimidate, and legitimate business is throttled by design.
The Infantile Sickness of the Left is Destroying what COVID didn’t.
