SubX.News® Street Report – April 14, 2026
It’s hot, sticky, and wrong in Chicago.
82 degrees in mid-April. Tornado watches over the suburbs. The scanner is rolling nonstop.
I’m driving the blocks with the mic on and Bluetooth half-working, watching it unfold in real time.
Two patterns are impossible to ignore.
Economic collapse at street level
An entire corner is dead at Dearborn and Huron — no business, no foot traffic, just empty space. That’s not theory. That’s what happens when money leaves a block.
No jobs. No customers. No stability.
Just vacancy.
The same story repeats citywide: storefront after storefront dark, surface lots idle, businesses that once anchored neighborhoods gone or barely hanging on.
The math is brutal and simple:
Less work → more crime.
More crime → more closures.
More closures → even less work.
That loop is tightening fast.
You feel it in your own pocket — gas, repairs, bills stacking up while income doesn’t stretch. Small operators are getting crushed the same way.
The collapse of deterrence
At Chicago and Wells, the BP is still “open” — but the front door is gone. A Jeep smashed through early that morning, backed up, hit it again, ripped out the ATM, and fled. A few thousand stolen.
Tens of thousands in damage left behind.
A worker sitting there guarding the hole.
That’s not theft.
That’s urban terrorism.
It’s designed to make normal business impossible.
One hit like that can kill a marginal store for good — and every other business on the block sees it and wonders if they’re next.
The scanner fills in the rest of the picture all day:
A guy swinging a machete through cars on the inbound Blue Line at Logan Square during rush hour.
Batteries.
Bus driver threats.
Guns near schools.
Open drug use in broad daylight.
Driving through the Loop, the contradictions are everywhere — pockets of normal traffic, but block after block of dark storefronts.
Groups lingering.
Watching.
Waiting.
You can feel it building.
Late afternoon, I’m zigzagging through downtown and make the call:
I’m not staying down here tonight. I’ve seen enough flash mobs and smash-and-grabs on video. I don’t need to film another one when the thin line snaps.
Then sure enough, the pressure spills over on the West Side.
Roosevelt and Avers, around 8:30 p.m.:
Shots fired… make it a 10-1.
We need more cars… keep the cars coming.
Stay together… do not leave the scene by yourself.
Officers walking into a growing crowd with gunfire coming from multiple directions.
That’s what losing control of the street sounds like.
Crime has now fully reversed direction in the city.
What started as an early-year decline has been erased.
Year-to-date: murders up 6%, shootings up 7%.
Last 28 days: murders up 23%, shootings up 30%.
Week 15 doesn’t show stabilization — it shows the surge is still growing.
Bottom line from the blocks:
Empty corners where businesses used to be.
Destroyed storefronts where businesses are still trying to survive.
Bold, daytime disorder with almost no visible pushback.
That’s not random crime anymore.
That’s a city losing the line between order and chaos.
Stay alert. Hydrate in this heat.
Watch your surroundings.
Document what you see.
