Chicago Teachers Union Tries to Dismiss Financial Records Lawsuit … Judge Says Produce the Records
A Cook County judge shut down the Chicago Teachers Union’s attempt to end a lawsuit over withheld financial audits, ruling the fight isn’t over just because documents were finally posted. As the ruling makes clear in practice, “CTU doesn’t get to hide the ball, then claim the game is over once they’re forced to hand it over.”
The case centers on whether CTU improperly withheld financial records from its own members, and whether it is obligated to provide full, unabridged audits going forward. The court found CTU can’t escape accountability by releasing records after being sued while still claiming it never had to.
“Posting documents after getting sued doesn’t erase the obligation or the question of whether they were required all along,” the decision signals, rejecting the idea that the case simply disappears.
The union’s motion for summary judgment was denied, and members were granted the right to force deeper discovery into CTU’s finances. “This isn’t about whether records exist — it’s about whether CTU was withholding them from its own members,” and now that question moves into the discovery phase where internal decisions come under scrutiny.
The case now moves forward, with more internal records potentially coming to light before a May 14 court date. “CTU tried to close the door on this case — the court just forced it back open,” setting up the next phase where transparency and accountability will be tested in full view.
