SubX.News® Street Report
Hot air moved through Chicago on Presidents Day, the kind of February warmth that brings people out but doesn’t change what the city is underneath, and the day unfolded like most do — movement, noise, and the same problems shifting block to block with the return of downtown Teen Trend shootings, as calls moved steadily across police radio through the afternoon and into the night.
Radio news throughout the afternoon carried the backdrop of the day, traffic reports warning of heavy delays across the Kennedy, Edens, and I-80 corridors as temperatures climbed into the mid-60s under sunny skies. Presidents Day programming mixed with local headlines, including early voting issues in DuPage County, national coverage of preparations for NASA’s Artemis II mission, and updates on a youth hockey shooting in Rhode Island.
A southbound Red Line train was moving just after 2:09 PM when a passenger reported a strong odor of human waste coming from railcar 5286, using the call button to alert the operator and request the car be taken out of service. The train stopped at Cermak–Chinatown, an older woman identified as “TT” was moved out of the immediate area, and the railcar was cleared.
Traffic along the West Side slowed near Oakley as the afternoon moved toward the 3:39 PM hour, where a blue sedan traveling westbound on Madison drove through the intersection and struck the passenger side of a black pickup driven by a 57-year-old man. The sedan’s driver and a passenger ran from the scene, leaving the injured driver behind with blunt-force injuries before he was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, no citations issued and further questions directed to Cicero Police.
Helicopter traffic cut across the airwaves as units were asked to move toward Fulton and Lockwood after a vehicle hit and occupants fled, officers describing a male with short dreads and a slim build as perimeter units spread through the neighborhood.
The late afternoon pulled attention north toward the Clybourn and Diversey corridor near the Costco around the 5:30 PM hour after a caller reported people climbing on a rooftop near Damen and Elston, describing one as moving up a smokestack and calling it in as a possible sniper situation. Police helicopter and POD cameras tracked movement across the roofline near 2611 North Hoyne, identifying four figures but never confirming a weapon, with radio traffic later indicating three detained in the 2600 block of North Hoyne as PH1 reported the roof clear and all individuals taken into custody at the Lathrop Homes abandoned central heating plant.
Evening moved back toward the West Side, where a carjacking call surfaced near Madison and Parkside around the 6:39 PM hour after a 2018 black Dodge Durango was taken at gunpoint by a group of unknown men, the robbery reported roughly thirty minutes after it happened with no detailed suspect descriptions broadcast.
Scanner chatter followed another pursuit on the South Side, units calling out a suspect in a black hoodie running northbound through alleys near Lowe as fences were jumped and squads converged from multiple directions.
Teen Trend violence ended in a shooting as Washington and Wabash turned into a crime scene during an evening Teen Trend around the 8:31 PM hour, when a verbal dispute between groups of teens turned physical and gunfire followed. A 14-year-old boy was struck in the left foot and taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good to fair condition as officers already assigned to the detail moved in and detained a person of interest.
Radio traffic pushed urgency back onto the air as units began calling out a 10-1 near 52nd and Wood after an off-duty officer was reported shot at, descriptions of multiple offenders in dark clothing and ski masks moving through the area as squads converged and details continued to come in.
Late in the night along the Far South Side near the 12700 block of South Wentworth around the 11:00 PM hour, a 16-year-old boy walking in the area was approached by two unknown males on foot, one producing a handgun and demanding his property. The teen tried to run, heard shots, and realized he had been hit, sustaining gunshot wounds to the left thigh and right calf before self-transporting to Roseland Hospital where he was listed in fair condition.
No fatalities were reported in the incidents that unfolded through the evening, though the steady sequence of calls traced the familiar pattern of a warm winter day carrying crowds into the streets and police radios into the night.
The warm air that carried people into the streets earlier in the day never really changed what unfolded as the hours moved forward, the same rhythm of calls, crowds, and sudden violence tracing a path from transit lines to neighborhood intersections to the downtown core and back again. Presidents Day ended the way many warm winter days do in Chicago, with movement slowing, lights coming on across the city, and the last of the police radios carrying through the night as another day slipped into the record.
All details in this report are drawn from live CPD radio monitoring and on-scene observation where noted and remain subject to update as official information becomes available.
