SubX.News® Street Report – April 16, 2026
First break in the illusion came just after lunch in the Loop, when someone jumped from a building at 235 West Van Buren, between Wells and Franklin.
Police and fire trucks crowded the block. By late afternoon, the sirens were gone and only the cleanup remained. Around 5:19 p.m., crews in turnout gear washed blood into the sewer grates while traffic and pedestrians moved past just feet away.
From the curb, it was said like routine—that this kind of thing happens downtown “once every other month.”
Official records from the Cook County Medical Examiner confirm a death investigation (Case ME2026-02016) involving Jermey Bujan, a 38-year-old male, at 235 W. Van Buren on April 16, 2026.
High-rise incidents like this are highly visible, but verified fatalities at specific downtown addresses remain relatively infrequent, typically fewer than five per year in the central district.
Still, on the street, it wasn’t treated like a shock. It was folded into the day—mentioned in the same breath as a shooting miles away at 78th and Eberhart.
By late afternoon, the narrative machine was already running. Around 4:00 p.m. and again at 5:50 p.m., talk radio tried to stitch that reality into a broader frame, opening with markets at record highs.
The S&P, Dow, and Nasdaq were all surging—proof, on paper, that the economy was thriving.
Segments jumped fast.
- President Trump announcing a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon
- Hyde Park High School homicide tied to a vape pen
- City’s quiet push to take over the Greyhound bus terminal
- Drug dealing and gang corners in downtown Chicago
- Special education services being restored at Catholic schools
- FAA plan to cut more than 300 flights a day at O’Hare
- Bomb threat at the home of the Pope’s brother
Threaded through it all was a simple question:
If everything is packaged, framed, and spun, how is anyone supposed to know what’s real?
As the evening commute approached, the weather joined the act.
Just before six, a low white wall of steam‑like fog rolled up Michigan Avenue near Roosevelt.
Within minutes the skyline began to vanish.
One update after another tracked the change: at 6:04 pm the fog was “coming in quick,” swallowing buildings and lanes of traffic; by 6:20 it was colder and drivers were creeping along inside a gray tunnel.
At Navy Pier around 6:36, the water, the city and even the end of the pier seemed to dissolve into the haze.
The descriptions sounded more like a movie set than a Midwestern spring night—people joked about end‑times and dystopia as the lakefront disappeared behind a curtain of white.
Underneath the jokes, the scanner kept chattering about knife calls, reckless cars on Lake Shore Drive and gangs rumored to be getting paid to vote.
The weather felt less like a backdrop and more like a metaphor: the thicker the fog, the harder it was to see what was actually happening.
Later that night, the story moved underground. Around 9:55 pm at the Roosevelt Red Line station, a call went out about a large group of teenagers on the platform, one possibly armed.
When officers arrived, the “gun” turned out to be a lighter shaped like a handgun. The details were almost absurd—kids with a novelty flame toy—but nobody was laughing.
Just days earlier, a teen had been murdered at a CTA bus stop.
The commentary around the Roosevelt stop was blunt:
Chicago has a gang problem, and it was riding the trains along with everyone else.
Transit workers and riders were left to stand in the middle, unarmed and under‑protected, while unions and managers argued over politics.
Then came the Socialist Drug tents. By 10:15 p.m., the focus was back at street level on the South Side, at 23rd and Halsted. Outside a homeless shelter, rows of tents sat on the sidewalk and in the shadows.
The area is represented by Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez of the 25th Ward.
Sigcho-Lopez is a prominent Ecuadorian-American member of the DSA. Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, he emigrated to the U.S. alone as a teenager following political instability in his home country.
It is strange that an immigrant socialist allows open-air drug use on sidewalks in his ward.
Those tents are storefronts for drug dealing, set up right next to an institution meant to help people climb out of the same misery that fed the trade.
Rumors have it his wife approved the site as a migrant shelter despite health and sanitation concerns.
That same wife, Loreen Targos, is also his top donor—about $80,000 in contributions and loans, with additional support coming from her family.
She works as a physical scientist at the EPA and serves as board chair of the Metropolitan Tenants Organization.
One more place where the city’s official mission and its street reality had split apart.

After logging the overnight violence, the raw street reality came back into sharp focus.
The camera and the mic didn’t bother with polite language.
Seen in a straight line—from
- Body washed off Van Buren asphalt
- Booming stock numbers and flight cuts
- City swallowed by fog
- Teenagers on a Red Line platform with a fake gun
- Drug tents outside a city shelter
The day read like a single story.
On the surface, Chicago moved through markets, weather, and press releases like any other big city.
Down on the pavement, something else was happening:
a pattern of death,
neglect,
and improvisation,
That only showed up if someone was willing to stand close enough to see it.
