I am absolutely not against immigrants, because I’m an immigrant too

by Jacky Zhang

Just like most people in this community, my entire family immigrated to the United States.

We understand how challenging life can be in this country; some people face document issues, and some must work multiple jobs to support their families. We all have our struggles and experience unequal treatment in this country.

The sudden decision by the government to allow thousands of refugees in, with almost none of us living here receiving proper notice, is clearly one form of inequality. I am certain that if this was about a group of wealthy white people living in the North, they would be informed immediately, and there might not even be a refugee camp set up.

If the government truly treated us equally and cared about us, why didn’t they come and inform us? If they don’t even consider us as people, how can we expect them to treat these refugees as such?

I understand that these refugees come to the United States in search of a better life. I have seen many women with children, and it pains my heart. But is the government truly prepared?

Winter is approaching, and there are so many empty buildings in Chicago, but instead they going to put these refugees in a TENT?

They mentioned these tents have heating, I believe everyone knows how cold a Chicago winter can be. If the government doesn’t provide enough resources when winter comes, what will these refugees do?Isn’t this inhumane?

The actions of the government is inhumane. Sending these people to the already struggling South, where there are already numerous problems. Have you seen the news about the South? How many people have died due to shootings? How many children feel threatened attending school in this area?

Our schools here lack sufficient resources, and teachers protest every year, while the government claims it has no money. So where did they suddenly find the funds to support these refugees?

The government’s careless act of throwing refugees here , they are thinking “Put these refugees in the poor areas; it’s already chaotic there. We need to protect our beautiful North and downtown to attract more tourists. Let the people in the South fend for themselves.”

They simply don’t care about these people; they only care about what can benefit them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t leave so many empty buildings and spend so much more money on building a TENT.

So, keep your eyes wide open; don’t let them accuse us of discrimination.

We’re just pawns for the wealthy and powerful in this situation.
