Mister J’s Dagwood Special – define special? located at 822 N. State St by John Kugler SubXNews June 7 2025 appx 115am
Chicago keeps grinding. Through gunfire, busted systems, and broken trust, the city’s working class never quits. But June 6 delivered a cruel blow: Officer Krystal Rivera was shot and killed by her partner’s bullet during a chaotic encounter with an armed suspect in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue.
Investigators confirmed no other weapon was fired during the incident, and the suspect who pointed a rifle at police remains in custody. It’s a gut-wrenching tragedy that leaves a family in mourning, a partner shattered, and a city asking how this keeps happening.
And the rest of the city? Still clocking in. Still dodging bullets, late fees, and ghost buses. Still holding it together—because no one else will.
Morning Mayhem
It started early on June 6. Around 9:30 a.m., outside Little Village Lawndale High School, a man in a Ford Focus pulled into the lot the wrong way. He approached a 15-year-old girl, asked her questions, then tried to grab her and force her toward his car. She fought back, screamed, and security guards stepped in. He fled.
One guard followed, snapped a license plate photo, and gave it to the cops. Ulicer Oviedo-Vasquez was arrested 20 minutes later. He told police he grabbed the girl because her brother owed him money. She said she’d never seen him before.
The judge called it “brazen and bold.”
That should have been the big story. Instead, it was just one piece in a mosaic of chaos.
A City Choking on Itself
By afternoon, Lake Shore Drive was clogged for no good reason—no crash, no construction—just a city choking on itself. People racing to second jobs, to school pickups, to hospitals, stuck in the mess.
That evening, a 41-year-old woman was shot in the stomach and arm at 3429 N Oriole who was transported to Loyola Hospital, in an unknown condition, her husband says he accidentally shot her when he dropped his gun.
The Fire Doesn’t Stop
Later that same day, the chaos didn’t let up.
In the Loop, a man and woman tag-teamed a backpack robbery at State and Ida B. Wells, snatching a laptop and vanishing into the city blur. Up near Hiawatha Park, shots rang out—no injuries, just more fear stitched into a quiet neighborhood.
Near Oak Woods Cemetery, six women ganged up on another, fists flying in the street while residents watched and shook their heads.
Then came the attempted robbery of a senior citizen on the city’s west end, where a 72-year-old male was parking his vehicle when an unknown armed male offender attempted to remove property from the victim through his car window.
The victim opened his car door and a struggle ensued between the two, the gun fell to the ground, and discharged striking the victim in the leg.
The offender fled the scene. The victim self-transported to Community First hospital where he is listed in good condition.
Drugged Out and Dumped On By midnight, Foster Beach looked like a zombie set. People laid out, barely conscious, slumped in the road at the LSD exit. Anyone coming off a shift at Northwestern or cleaning a downtown office had to swerve around them just to get home.
Wilson Avenue under Lake Shore Drive? Still a trash heap.
City workers mow grass at Montrose for Instagram posts while letting open-air drug dens fester just blocks away.
At State and Grand, dope slingers worked without a care past 1 a.m., like they had a license.
Meanwhile, Michigan Avenue was barely 25% alive.
The Riverwalk staggered at 30%.
Rush Street pulsed at 55%.
Montrose Harbor led the city at 64% capacity—families grilling, boaters cruising, kids chasing kites—a stubborn kind of defiance just blocks from the junkies.
Economic Betrayal
Back on the grind, the working class got another slap. Out in Momence, the Johnsonville plant shut down. 274 jobs gone. Moving to Wisconsin and Kansas. Another gift from Governor Pritzker’s brand of progress.
In Chicago, the housing scam continues: $830,000 per unit to build 207 homes at Roosevelt Square. That’s $172 million to pretend like something’s being done.
A downtown eatery where students, downtown collars and visitors could get a cheap lunch was boarded surrounded by junkies looked for for their next fix.
Meanwhile, Ald. Michelle Harris’s push to help everyday homeowners with $75,000 grants sits ignored.
The Regal Avalon Theater in the 8th Ward? Rezoned for residential without public input.
Sold out. Again.
No One’s Coming to Save Us
June 6 wasn’t just another violent day.
It was another day the system failed everyone.
It failed Krystal Rivera.
It failed the 15-year-old girl nearly kidnapped.
It failed the guy robbed in on State Street.
It failed the retiree who was gunned down.
And it failed the regulars, those holding down their blocks, raising kids, keeping kitchens warm, cleaning trains, staffing night shifts, and refusing to quit.
Because in Chicago, quitting isn’t on the menu.
Not now. Not ever.
