Data anomaly where three cumulative 2026 categories mistakenly decrease from August 1 to August 2.
Because these are year-to-date cumulative counts, the totals should only ever stay the same or increase as time moves forward.
Everything else either stayed the same or went up, which is normal.
When cumulative numbers decrease like this, it almost always means the data source made revisions or corrections.
Why This Happens
This type of statistical backtracking usually occurs in police department dashboards for a couple of reasons:
Case Reclassification: Incidents initially logged as shootings may have been reclassified as a different crime type upon further investigation.
Data Cleansing: Duplicate entries or data entry errors from earlier in the year were discovered and removed on August 2.
What the dashboard snapshots do not explain is exactly which records were removed or why the three year-to-date totals went backward.
That distinction matters when the public and policymakers rely on percentage changes in the dashboard to measure whether violence is rising or falling.

Multi-Victim Shooting Incidents: 140 → 139 (−1)
