
The day began on the South Side in the early morning hours with two teenagers shot.
Police responded at 2:45 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 2200 block of East 67th Street.
Officers found a 16-year-old male unresponsive near an apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds and transported him to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
Canvassing the area led to the discovery of an 18-year-old male inside the apartment, also suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the same hospital in critical condition.
Two firearms were recovered on scene. No one was in custody. Area One Detectives are investigating.
Thirty minutes later, gunfire in the 8700 block of South Burley left a 40-year-old male shot in the left thigh during a verbal altercation after an offender produced a firearm. He was transported in fair condition. The offender fled.
Early afternoon marked the first fatal shootings.
Police responded at 1:20 p.m. to the White Castle parking lot in the 2300 block of West Roosevelt Road, where three male victims sat inside a vehicle when three armed offenders approached and fired shots into the car. The vehicle caught fire during the shooting.
Three victims were hit.
35-year-old male was pronounced on scene.
48-year-old male transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital and pronounced.
44-year-old male was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
The offenders fled. No one was in custody.
Police activity was reported at 2:30 p.m. inside the Wood Street Parking Structure at 1100 South Wood Street.
Inside the garage, a female victim was located with a gunshot wound and pronounced deceased. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified her as Shawnquanice Kimbrough, 34, who had been visiting UI Health for an appointment.
Her baby was in the back seat of the vehicle, unharmed.
Investigators said the shooting may be related to a domestic dispute. Follow-up notice at 2:54 p.m. stated there was no threat to campus, and the third level of the garage remained secured during the investigation.
Gunfire continued at 4:42 p.m. in the 700 block of North Wolcott, where a 32-year-old male traveling inside a vehicle sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Stroger Hospital and pronounced.
These homicide scenes — Roosevelt, Wood, and Wolcott — sit within the same West Side corridor less than three miles apart.
Four people were killed and one wounded within just over three hours.
Shots were exchanged at 4:50 p.m. in the 2400 block of North Tripp after a 35-year-old male produced a handgun and fired toward another individual. Return fire struck him in the ankle. He was transported in good condition and taken into custody.
Gunfire at 6:50 p.m. in the 900 block of North Leamington left a 12-year-old male riding inside a vehicle with a graze wound to the head. He was transported in fair condition. Two persons of interest were detained.
Final shooting of the night came at 8:16 p.m. in the 11800 block of South Eggleston, where a 29-year-old male walking outside was shot in the hip after a silver sedan approached and an offender fired. He was transported in fair condition. The offenders fled.
In roughly 18 hours, eleven people were shot — four killed and seven wounded — men, a woman, teenagers, a 12-year-old child, and even a baby present in the back seat.
No one was spared.
The violence came on the first few days of Black History Month.
