SubxNews Crime Report April 26 2026
Alphanso Talley, the 25-year-old suspect accused of shooting two Chicago police officers inside Swedish Hospital — killing one — had been a fugitive for weeks, escaped electronic monitoring, and was listed as an absconder by the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to court records and multiple government sources.
Illinois Department of Corrections records (Offender #Y38853) list his status as ABSCONDER while on parole, with an admission to Stateville Correctional Center and parole date of January 9, 2026.
Talley allegedly robbed a Family Dollar store at gunpoint around 8 a.m. on April 25, 2026, in Albany Park. Officers arrested him shortly after using a GPS tracker in the stolen goods.
While in custody and complaining of needing medical attention for chest pains, he was taken to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital (5140 North California Avenue) under guard by Officer John Bartholomew, 38, and his 57-year-old partner.
Around 10:50 a.m., while being treated in the emergency department, Talley allegedly gained access to a hidden firearm, shot both officers, and briefly fled the hospital naked with medical electrodes still on his chest.
He was recaptured nearby in the 2600 block of West Carmen Avenue. A third firearm (beyond the officers’ service weapons) was recovered.
Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year CPD veteran, was pronounced dead.
The 57-year-old partner with 21 years on the force remains on life support.
April 2025 Class X Felony Arrest
Almost one year to the date, Talley had been arrested by Chicago Police on April 18, 2025 at 6522 S Bishop Street (CB# 30459554) for aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, a Class X felony.
Charges included Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking with a Firearm (720 ILCS 5.0/18-4-A-4), Armed Robbery (720 ILCS 5.0/18-2-A-2), multiple warrants, and driving without a license.
Chicago Police released Talley from custody on April 21, 2025.
The charges in that arrest were not minor. Armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm are both Class X felonies under Illinois law, the most serious category short of murder.
Each carries mandatory prison sentences of 6 to 30 years, with a required 15-year firearm enhancement, making the minimum sentence 21 years. Neither charge is eligible for probation, meaning prison time is required upon conviction.
The question now is: why was he still out walking the streets of Chicago?
Extensive Criminal History & Court Failures
Alphanso Talley has a documented history of violent crime dating back to 2017, including multiple felony convictions and repeated releases despite ongoing violations.
2017: Series of armed robberies, including attacks in Boystown and armed robberies of multiple victims on the Grand Red Line platform in River North. He was sentenced to four concurrent 7-year prison terms.
2021: Convicted of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon (felon in possession of a firearm) — received a 3-year sentence.
2023: Arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing from police, and battery on correctional officers while in jail.
2024: Charged with aggravated battery of peace officers; released on electronic monitoring by Judge John Lyke in August 2024 (monitor later removed). He later failed to appear in court.
April 2025: While already on pretrial release for three separate cases, Talley and accomplice Donvon McClary allegedly committed armed vehicular hijacking and armed robbery. He was rearrested but later released again.
January 2026: Talley pleaded guilty to the older stolen vehicle and aggravated battery cases. He was released the same day on electronic monitoring with permission to attend classes at Truman College (initially 5–11 hours/day, later expanded to 7–16.5 hours/day).
March 2026 Violations: On March 8–9, Talley left home without permission, violating his monitoring conditions. His ankle monitor later died after he failed to charge it.
A pretrial services officer notified the court on March 11 that his whereabouts were unknown. Judge Lyke issued a warrant, which remained active on April 25.
At the time of the Swedish Hospital shooting, Talley had multiple felony cases pending, was wanted on a failure-to-appear warrant, and was listed as a parole absconder by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
He had a documented history as an electronic monitoring escapee.
Note: Multiple reports state Talley had at least 21 arrests over the past nine years, along with multiple felony convictions for armed robbery and firearm possession.
Endeavor Health stated that the suspect was screened with a metal detector upon arrival and was escorted by law enforcement at all times.
Case is a prime example of the pro-criminal policies of the Chicago Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the SAFE-T Act signed into law by Governor Pritzker.
This case highlights failures in Cook County’s pretrial release policies, electronic monitoring effectiveness, and judicial decisions that repeatedly returned a violent repeat offender to the streets.
This is a developing story. Talley faces first-degree murder and other charges.
SubxNews extends our deepest condolences to the family of Officer John Bartholomew, the injured officer and his loved ones, and the entire Chicago Police Department.
