The Sankofa Village Wellness Center, located at 4305 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60624, is a 60,000-square-foot community health and recreational hub that celebrated its grand opening on April 23, 2026.
As the flagship of the larger Sankofa Wellness Village initiative, it aims to close the significant life expectancy gap in the West Garfield Park neighborhood by providing integrated healthcare, fitness, and social services.
The project was financed through a combination of private grants, public funds, and institutional investments:
Chicago Prize Grant: A foundational $10 million grant from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.
City of Chicago Contributions: Over $7 million in support from the city, including $5.9 million from land sale proceeds and $1.5 million from the Chicago Recovery Plan.
New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC): $10 million provided via the Chicago Development Fund and an additional $14.5 million in allocations from partners like BMO Harris and Chase.
Institutional & Private Donations: $3 million foundational gift from an anonymous donor.
$1.5 million in capital and operational investment from Rush University System for Health.
Other Grants: $1.5 million to $2.5 million from Community Development Grants.
