ISP trooper shot overnight during traffic stop in Springfield, Illinois. Suspect fled prompting a shelter in place.
37-year-old Cristobal Santana was taken into custody at around 2 am after an extensive search.
The dramatic events unfolded at around 10:44 last night when an officer initiated a traffic stop. Santana, who Chicago Police were searching for in connection to a homicide, was an occupant of the vehicle. There are no clear reports on how the situation unfolded, but at some point Santana resisted and ultimately fired a weapon striking the officer in the leg. Santana then fled the scene on foot prompting the shelter in place.
There is no additional information on the initial incident or on any charges filed against Santana.
SPRINFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A man is in custody after a police officer was shot during a traffic stop in Springfield Tuesday night.
Springfield police and other departments responded to the 1600 block of Toronto Road at 10:44 p.m. to reports of an officer shot. In a release, SPD said the officer was from a different department but did not clarify which department the officer was from. Police said the officer was conducting a traffic stop when the shooting occurred.
The Illinois State Police clarified it was an ISP Trooper who interacted with a suspect, 37-year-old Cristobal Santana of Chicago, believed to wanted in connection with a homicide occurring recently in Chicago.
WAND News called Chicago Police. They said Santana has not been formally charged in connection with the homicide at this time.
During the interaction, gunshots were fired, and the Trooper was struck in the leg, ISP said.
The trooper, identified by State Representative Bradley Fritts (R) as Kody Green, is in the hospital listed in serious condition.
Santana fled his vehicle on foot, but was taken into custody at 1:58 a.m. No other police officers were injured.
Santana is also being treated for injuries at the hospital, ISP reports.
Toronto Road was closed from Cotton Hill Road to Horseview Drive. It has now reopened.
A shelter in place order had been given for all area residents, but that has since been lifted.
Governor JB Pritzker released a short statement saying, “Awful news from this morning. MK and I are praying for the trooper who was injured in the line of duty last night.”
ISP is investigating the shooting. No additional information is being released at this time.
The public is reminded that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

1600 block of Toronto Rd is a large apartment complex. Lots of young college kids and young couples with little kids everywhere. Lots of places to hide. Vehicles, dumpsters, wooded areas, a lake, landscaping with retaining walls, 20 plus buildings, sidewalks that lead to total darkness! It’s amazing they got him without anyone else getting hurt in my opinion. My Son and DIL just moved out of an apartment there back to Salem in July because she didn’t like the violence and crime in Springfield. This will for sure go in her file of “I told you so’s”!

This occurred near 54th and Narragansett in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood of Chicago. There has been no arrest made, and the police are still looking for him.

She was shot 10 times and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
There is no one in custody as Area One detectives investigate.

A man who was suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend could be seen in shocking dashcam footage as he shoots an Illinois State trooper who pulled him over, police said.
The newly released footage shows the moment Cristobal Santana, 37, steps out of his car on Oct. 24, just before 11 p.m. to confront officer Dakotah “Kody” Chapman-Green on Toronto Road, in Springfield.
Chapman-Green immediately backs away from the car after seeing Santana armed with a handgun, and he steps out of the frame as the gunman aims his weapon at the cop.
Santana quickly ducks behind the vehicle before firing a volley of bullets, firing at least 10 times, CBS News reports.
Although Chapman-Green was hit multiple times, the officer went on to chase Santana to a nearby parking lot, where the suspect proceeded to beat the wounded officer with his gun.
The state trooper was repeatedly struck in the head, leaving him with brain bleed and facial and skull fractures, state police said.
Santana then fled the scene, with two Good Samaritans rushing in to help Chapman-Green as he struggled to get back up.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.
“He’s still in the hospital and continues to improve each day,” Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly told reporters Tuesday.
A few hours after the shootout, Santana was taken into custody by state troopers after being hit by a police car.
He was also hospitalized and had been charged with five counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Santana is suspected to have killed his ex-girlfriend — 37-year-old elementary school teacher Adrianna Lopez — in Chicago last week.
Police said the special education and pre-K teacher had been shot 10 times in the chest outside her home.
Family members told police that Lopez had recently filed for an order of protection against Santana, claiming he was prone to violence when they were together, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Chicago police said the murder case was still under investigation and have yet to name Santana as the suspect.
