In one of the bloodiest weekends of the year, at least 34 people were shot or killed across Chicago — seven fatally, including a baby drowned by his mother — and yet not a single shooting suspect had been arrested as of Monday morning.
Chicago endured a devastating weekend of violence that left at least 34 people shot or killed, with seven confirmed dead — six by gunfire and one from an apparent murder–suicide attempt at South Shore Beach, where a woman allegedly drowned her infant son in Lake Michigan.
The homicide count represents a 133% increase over the same weekend in 2024, but despite the carnage, not one shooting suspect was in custody by the start of the week.
Victims were gunned down in alleys, homes, cars, and even a shopping mall parking lot, underscoring both the scale of the violence and the apparent impunity of the attackers.
Deadly Gunfire from West Side to South Shore
The weekend’s bloodshed began Friday night, when a 22-year-old man was killed in North Lawndale around 10 p.m., shot in the torso while standing outside on the sidewalk of the 2800 block of West Arthington.
Later that night, a 17-year-old boy was dropped at Holy Cross Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after being shot near the 6600 block of South Marshfield. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Just before midnight Saturday, gunfire erupted in the parking lot of a shopping mall at 87th and Lafayette on the city’s South Side. Three people standing near parked cars were shot — a 24-year-old man died at the scene, while a 25-year-old woman and another man were wounded.
On the 7500 block of South St. Lawrence, in an alley early Saturday morning, a 37-year-old woman was shot and killed, while a man nearby was wounded. Shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday on the 2000 block of East 68th Street, a man was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another deadly shooting occurred early Saturday on the 8200 block of South Houston, where a 20-year-old man was killed by a shot to the neck while three others were wounded outside a multi-unit residential building.
Dozens More Wounded
Beyond the fatalities, at least 27 others were wounded by gunfire across the city.
The victims included a 13-year-old boy shot inside a home on the 500 block of North Central by a known offender, who fled the scene; a 46-year-old woman shot while riding in a car near 3100 South Lawndale; and a 24-year-old woman grazed on the cheek while a passenger in a vehicle at 1900 South Wabash.
A 30-year-old man was shot in the back while walking near 300 West 64th. In Pilsen, two men were struck on the street at 1900 West 19th, while another man was shot in the ankle just blocks away at 2400 West Warren.
Saturday afternoon, four men were shot on a sidewalk on the 4900 block of West Ferdinand when gunmen exited a car and opened fire. Later in Hyde Park, two men were shot on the sidewalk at 5600 South Dorchester after being confronted by assailants who emerged from a vehicle.
Victims continued to arrive at hospitals throughout the weekend, many unwilling or unable to describe their attackers.
Apparent Murder–Suicide Attempt at Lake Michigan
In addition to the six confirmed shooting homicides, the weekend’s death toll included the tragic drowning of a one-year-old boy in an apparent murder–suicide attempt at South Shore Beach.
Around 9:45 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 7000 block of South South Shore Drive, where they found a 31-year-old woman in Lake Michigan with self-inflicted slash wounds to her wrists. Investigators determined she had allegedly carried the baby into the lake and drowned him before being pulled out herself. The baby was recovered by the Marine Unit and pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.
The woman, believed to be a relative of the child, was taken into custody and hospitalized. The incident is being investigated as a homicide, though no charges had been announced as of Monday.
No Shooting Suspects Arrested
Despite the scale of violence, police reported not one suspect in custody for any of the weekend’s shootings as of Monday morning. Area detectives continue to investigate each case.
Final Tally and Historical Context
By the end of Sunday night, at least seven people were killed and another 27 wounded by gunfire across Chicago — a grim total compared to previous years, according to HeyJackass, a crime data tracking site.

The 133% increase in homicides over 2024 underscores the fragility of year-to-year improvements and the persistence of deep-rooted violence.
By Sunday night, the city faced a chilling reality: seven dead, 27 more wounded, double the homicides of last year — and, despite dozens of witnesses and cameras, not one shooting suspect in custody. So can we really trust the mayor when he claims crime is down and he deserves the credit?
As Hey Jackass put it:
“Don’t demonize Monday — it’s just starved of opportunities in its own community.”
And while most of the victims were Black, there seemed to be no urgency in catching the killers.
If the mayor wears the crown when the numbers go down, then he owns the throne when the city drowns.
Ain’t that so.
