CHICAGO — A mass shooting left five people injured, four critically, near Lincoln Park Zoo overnight, according to initial information from the scene.
The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of North Stockton occurred around 4:40 a.m.
“A group of people were gathered outside … when a verbal altercation ensued,” Chicago police said in a media statement. “Unknown offender(s) then opened fired [sic], striking five victims. No one is in custody and Area Three Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
Police officers said found a 23-year-old man at the scene with gunshot wounds throughout his body. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
A baseball hat, plastic cups, and a liquor bottle dotted a jogging path as Chicago cops draped yellow tape around the area.
Shortly after officers arrived, a minivan that sped from the shooting pulled up to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Streeterville. Three men and a 17-year-old girl riding in the vehicle were taken in for treatment. The men, ages 23, 31, and 44, were all in critical condition with gunshot wounds to their legs and torsos.
The girl was in good condition with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.
The minivan’s driver drove away from the hospital after dropping the victims off. Police found the vehicle abandoned near State and Huron around 5:35 a.m. They were looking for the driver. A CPD surveillance camera operator described her as White and wearing a black hoodie with blood-covered khaki shorts.
An online post indicated that the Green City Market, a popular farmer’s market in the park immediately adjacent to the shooting scene, would start late today due to a “medical emergency.” The market’s vendors typically park on Stockton Drive, but the area was not accessible as police conducted their investigation.
Two shooting incidents have been reported in Lincoln Park this year, with a total of six victims.
The neighborhood had four shooting victims in four incidents for all of last year.
There were three victims in three incidents at this point in 2021 and one victim as of June 17, 2020.
In 2019, the neighborhood recorded six victims in two shooting incidents as of June 17. But a mass shooting left seven people injured on the lakefront at Fullerton in July of that year.
Late-night car parties along Cannon Drive sparked a series of disturbances in the weeks before the lakefront shooting. The city quickly banned overnight parking on Cannon Drive in response to the incident, a move that Lincoln Park’s then-alderman, Michele Smith, said the move was designed to curb crime.
Just three weeks after the parking ban began, Smith declared victory, saying it produced “great results.” City data, however, showed crime along Cannon Drive was at its lowest point in 20 years when the ban started, and there was no measurable reduction in crime after the parking restrictions went into place.
