Preliminary Statement on Police-Involved Shooting in the 4200 block of S. Wells Homicide, Person Shot, Shots Fired – Police Involved 02-Jun-2023 01:16 AM
CHICAGO – On Wednesday, June 1, 2023, at approximately 8:21 p.m., a group of unknown offenders produced firearms and fired shots toward a group of individuals in the 4200 block of S. Wells. Officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert at that location observed multiple wounded individuals on the ground and a male armed with a handgun.
That armed offender then discharged his firearm in the direction of the officers. An officer returned fire and the offender fled and was taken into custody a short time later. It was discovered the offender had a gunshot wound to the leg.
At this time, it is unclear how that offender sustained that gunshot wound. Officers then rendered aid to the wounded individuals.
A total of five (5) individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were treated at local hospitals in various conditions.
Three officers were transported to local hospitals for observation.
One of the gunshot wound victims was pronounced at the hospital. Two handguns were recovered from the scene.
Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.

Male victim, 14 – gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to U of C Hospital where he was pronounced.
Male victim, 16 – gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to U of C Hospital and initially reported in good condition.
Male victim, 18 – gunshot wound to the back and self-transported to U of C Hospital initially reported in critical condition.
Male victim, 19 – gunshot wounds to the chest and leg and was transported to U of C Hospital initially reported in critical condition.
Female victim, 21 – gunshot wound to the hand and transported to Insight Hospital initially reported in unknown condition.
