“He had a deep hate for women”?Brittney Battaglia Logan Square woman found nearly decapitated in duffle bag; boyfriend had cleaning supplies … Genesis Silva, a convicted felon and registered sex offender, had machete in his backpack, missing girlfriend was dead in his bedroom: prosecutors

CHICAGO — A Logan Square man was carrying a machete in his backpack when Chicago police detectives approached him to discuss the disappearance of his girlfriend, who was later found nearly decapitated inside a duffle bag in his bedroom, prosecutors said Thursday.
Genesis Silva, a registered sex offender once charged with trying to kill his now ex-wife, was held without bail during a bond hearing by Judge William Fahy. Technically, Silva is being held without bail for allegedly being a felon in possession of a weapon—the machete—because the other felony he faces, concealing a homicidal death, is not eligible for no-bail holds in Illinois.
Prosecutors have not charged Silva with murdering his girlfriend, Brittany Battaglia, but Chicago police continue to investigate the case.
Silva and Battaglia had been dating since last spring, prosecutors told Judge Fahy. Her roommate last saw her around 6:30 p.m. on June 2 when Battaglia left their apartment, saying she would walk to Silva’s nearby home and then go to a party.
Officials said the roommate and the roommate’s boyfriend filed separate missing person reports when Battaglia did not return by Sunday.
Chicago police detectives staked out Silva’s home as part of the missing person investigation. The investigators saw Silva leave the house and stopped him for a conversation. With a red and black backpack draped over his shoulder, Silva spoke with the detectives and then walked them back to his apartment in the 2000 block of North Kimball, prosecutors said.
Evidence collected
Detectives found Battaglia’s body inside a large duffle bag in Silva’s bedroom, prosecutors alleged. And the backpack he had been carrying allegedly contained a machete. The medical examiner ruled Battaglia’s death a homicide by multiple sharp force wounds.
In the kitchen, two garbage bags near a tarp contained shoes, a bucket, a paint suit, gloves, bleach, and a Swiffer. Tests of the materials showed the presence of blood, but none was visible, according to prosecutors.
Police also found three lists of items like cleaning supplies, chemicals, and boots.
A recovered note that allegedly read, “Can you ask average time until smell, etc?”
Officials claimed Silva was carrying two phones, two pocket knives, and an icepick when police arrested him. The machete in his backpack also tested positive for blood, prosecutors said. A second machete was found in his car. DNA tests are still pending on various items that police recovered.
Background
Silva was charged with attempted murder and sexual assault of his wife in 2009, prosecutors said Thursday. After returning home from a party, the couple argued, and he strangled her, repeatedly asking, “Why won’t you just die?”
He then forced her into bed at knifepoint and sexually assaulted her, according to officials.
Prosecutors eventually settled the case by allowing Silva to plead guilty to a single charge of criminal sexual abuse in exchange for a two-year probation sentence.
The couple has since divorced.
“He had a deep hate for women,” Silva’s ex-wife told the Sun-Times yesterday. “It’s definitely one of those American Psycho type of things because it’s like two completely different sides of a person.”
‘Turned his life around’
“By all accounts, Mr. Silva has turned his life around,” his defense attorney argued Thursday. She said he participates in “harm reduction” by distributing Narcan and discouraging the use of narcotics.
A Whitney Young graduate, he owns Genesis Platforms, an audiovisual consulting company, the lawyer continued.
She objected to the state’s no-bail request, arguing that a machete does not qualify as a weapon under relevant state law.
Judge Fahy disagreed.

Convicted murderer Steven Hawthorne allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend, Tamera Washington, and her current boyfriend, Norman Redden, in South Chicago.
CHICAGO (WLS) — The family and friends of Tamera Washington were left shattered as they returned on Thursday night to where she and her boyfriend were killed.
Police arrested her ex-boyfriend, a convicted murderer, who was out on bond in another case at the time of the killings.
“I’m devastated. My heart is broken,” said Marietta Stepter, Washington’s aunt. “He will not get away with murder for the second time.”
Under the tears and heartache is anger as Washington’s loved ones gathered outside of her South Chicago home on Luella near 83rd.
Family returned to the scene where Washington and her boyfriend were murdered just days ago.
“She was a resilient young lady, full of life, happy, loved to sing – oh my God!” Stepter said.
Her voice is now forever silenced.
Prosecutors said early Sunday morning, Steven Hawthorne entered Washington’s home with a key and went upstairs, where he and shot and killed her boyfriend, Norman Redden, while he was in bed.
Court documents said other relatives, including Washington’s two young daughters, hid in the house while Hawthorne chased Washington down outside, allegedly beating her to death with a large rock.
He was soon arrested after a short chase.
“I got a little piece. Just a little bit,” Stepter said.
At the time of the murders, Hawthorne was out on bond in a pending “Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon” case that stemmed from a traffic stop in January.
Back in 1983, Hawthorne was convicted of murder when he was a teenager. State prison officials said he was released in 2017.
“And them people let him out for him to kill my niece. I want justice,” Stepter said.
As Hawthorne is, now, back in custody, Washington’s family, received a sign of hope from above.
“This rainbow is telling me that her death won’t be in vain, that he won’t get away with this,” Stepter said.
ABC7 reached out to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, but was told they don’t comment on pending litigation.
Prosecutors said Hawthorne was wearing his GPS monitoring bracelet, which showed him near Washington’s home at the time of the murders.
Hawthorne is being held on no bond. He’s due back in court next month.
Suspect arrested after woman who was stabbed at Chicago train station named her ex-boyfriend as killer before dying

Police have arrested a man who allegedly stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend on a Chicago train station platform over the weekend, the Chicago Police Department announced. Alejandro Arellano, 31, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Samantha Maldonado, police said on Monday.
In the early hours of Saturday, morning Arellano followed Maldonado to the Adams and Wabash CTA station and stopped her from boarding a train, allegedly stabbing her multiple times before boarding a train himself and going home, according to police.
Maldonado was able to push herself free from Arellano and run to the street before she collapsed, police said. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Prior to her death, Maldonado named her ex-boyfriend as her assailant, CBS Chicago reported. Arellano was arrested less than 15 hours after the incident with the help of surveillance video footage from the CTA station, police said.
Arellano and Maldonado had been in a relationship for six months and had recently broken up, prosecutors said. The pair met at a local pub just one hour before the incident, CBS Chicago reported.
“Although this offender is in custody, there is still a family at the center of this who is grieving the loss of a young woman, who had her whole life ahead of her,” Police First Deputy Supt. Eric Carter told reporters on Monday. “We hope knowing that the person responsible for her death has been brought to justice brings a small measure of closure and peace for the family.”
Arellano has a prior criminal record, but the charges did not involve Maldonado, Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti said Monday. The 31-year-old has been ordered held without bond Monday afternoon, according to CBS News Chicago.
Wisconsin man charged in 3 separate incidents involving female students at DePaul
By Noel Brennan, Jeramie Bizzle
Updated on: April 14, 2023 / 10:07 PM / CBS Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) – A man is facing charges in three separate incidents involving female students on the Lincoln Park campus of DePaul University.
Police arrested Frank Redd, 26, of Madison, Wisconsin around 5:36 p.m. on Thursday, in the 900 block of West Belden Avenue.
DePaul University said at 4 p.m. Thursday, its public safety department was notified that a student was attacked in a first-floor restroom at the Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 N. Kenmore Ave.
“We students call it the SAC,” said DePaul senior Alex Washer. “That’s the one place I would never to be attacked, in all honesty.”
The student scared off the attacker and was able to use the duress button in the restroom, DePaul said.
“I love that there are those panic buttons everywhere on campus,” said DePaul senior Elizabeth McCrea.
This victim was a 28-year-old woman, police said.
DePaul said while speaking to this victim, its public safety department was notified of another attack on a student at the Sheffield Garage, 2331 N. Sheffield Ave. The student was able to escape, DePaul said.
“It must have been absolutely terrifying. I can’t imagine that,” said Washer.
A police report alleged Redd pushed this victim down inside her car and put his hand around her throat and “squeezed with force” – nearly causing her to lose consciousness.
This student was a 22-year-old woman, and the attack happened at 3:58 p.m., police said.
One of the victims did not want to be interviewed on camera, but did share what she experienced as she got away from her attacker.
The woman said approached Redd, thinking he was a student. She asked for directions, and he offered to show her the way to go.
But she said she felt uneasy and started to walk away.
She said that was she says he attacked her from behind – putting his hand over her mouth and nose, saying, “Don’t scream, I have a knife.”
DePaul said the same suspect took a backpack from the DePaul Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. The victim in this case was also a 22-year-old woman, police said.
The backpack contained an Apple Macbook Air and iPad valued at about $2,200, according to a police report. The victim was able to get her backpack back from a witness who confronted Redd, the report said.
The backpack theft happened just 20 minutes before Redd was arrested, police said.
“I know my mom would be freaking out right now if she knew,” Washer said.
As CBS 2’s Noel Brennan reported, accepting the realities that come with a campus in the city does not make violence any easier for DePaul students to stomach.
“I think when accepting like going to DePaul you have to take in all those different pros and cons, if you will, of what could potentially happen,” McCrea said.
“Possibly fearing for your life at your school shouldn’t be a reality in my personal opinion,” said Washer. “I just can’t believe it.”
Redd, a convicted sex offender, is charged with two felony counts of unlawful restraint, one felony count of aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and one misdemeanor count of theft.

CHICAGO — A man has been charged with the murder of his pregnant girlfriend who had been missing since last month.
Yaer Shen, 46, is facing one felony count of first-degree murder, one felony count of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one felony count of concealing homicidal death.
Shen was arrested Tuesday at his home in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood. Authorities allege he is responsible for killing his missing pregnant girlfriend, 40-year-old Bilian Fang.
Fang was reported missing on Oct. 9 from the 3000 block of South Lock Street and was 8 months pregnant at the time.
According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, Shen and Fang were in a verbal altercation, which turned physical when Yaer allegedly strangled the woman to death.
Court documents state that Shen and Fang were in a dating relationship and Fang was carrying Shen’s child at the time. She also worked at the restaurant that Shen owns in Lincolnwood.
Documents state that Fang was attempting to contact her 14-year-old daughter many times prior to the incident. She did not have a phone of her own because Shen allegedly broke hers after a verbal altercation a day earlier.
After Fang was strangled to death, Shen allegedly drove to the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant to dump her body. An autopsy conducted on the unborn baby said it would have survived with medical attention after the slaying.
Detective claimed they found a handwritten note in Cantonese signed by Shen in Fang’s jacket, that stated in summary but not verbatim:
“I am sorry. I am not a good person. I made you suffer. I got scammed. I know it is irresponsible
for me to leave you. I hope we don’t meet in another life.”
Prosecutors said that after Shen was arrested, he admitted to the killing.
Shen was denied bail on Thursday.

A convicted felon and registered sex offender was charged Wednesday with hiding the body of his girlfriend, who was found stabbed to death this week at his Logan Square apartment after she was reported missing by her family.
Genesis Silva, 34, was charged with a felony count of concealing the death of Brittany Battaglia and a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer, according to Chicago police.
Police said the investigation into the slaying “remains ongoing by area detectives at the time.”
Battaglia, 33, was discovered Monday night during a search of Silva’s apartment in the 2000 block of North Kimball Avenue, police said. She was last seen Friday after heading there from her home a block away.

An autopsy found she died from “multiple incised wounds,” and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Her brother, AJ Battaglia, said he believes Silva remains the prime suspect in the killing. He said investigators have told the family they “are thoroughly investigating and trying to do everything by the book” to bring first-degree murder charges in the case.
Battaglia said the last week “has been a disaster” for the family. They have been going back and forth between Galena and Chicago to attend to his sister’s affairs, and Battaglia said he was even questioned by the state’s attorney’s office in connection with the investigation.
Battaglia remembered his sister as a free spirit who “always lived life to the fullest.” She worked as a cosmetologist and esthetician and was also an artist, the family has said.
“She didn’t care about what people thought about her; she didn’t care about the stigma of certain things,” he said. “She lived life how she wanted to live it, and she was happy.”
Silva has been a registered sex offender since he pleaded guilty to a felony count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in 2009, according to Illinois State Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He was sentenced to two years of probation.
Silva’s victim, Diana Ochoa, was his wife at the time, Cook County court records show.
In a deposition in subsequent divorce proceedings, Ochoa told a judge that Silva initially punched her in her chest and held her down with his knees. The violence continued the following day, when Ochoa said he threw her onto a bed, bit and choked her and then threatened her with a knife and sexually assaulted her.
In an interview, Ochoa insisted that prosecutors just “wanted to settle” her case, noting that having him placed on the sex offender registry was “the bare minimum” she asked for. She complained he wasn’t incarcerated after initially facing 13 charges, all of which were Class X felonies, the most serious offenses in the state.
The state’s attorney’s office did not say Wednesday why the charges were dismissed or why Silva was sentenced to probation.
Ochoa and Silva’s relationship began at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, where Ochoa said Silva had a large group of friends and helped launch a streaming radio station. It culminated with them getting married, Ochoa said, describing the nuptials as “a stupid teenage thing” that happened with little fanfare.
Eventually, Silva’s “dark side” began to rear its head, his ex-wife said. Ochoa said he lied compulsively, obsessively had sex with random people and was stifled by childhood traumas and his troubled relationship with his mother.
“He had a deep hate for women,” Ochoa said. “Everything with him was about sexual degradation. He liked to justify his violent tendencies, saying it was just sexual preferences.”
Still, he was “a pretty good father figure” to the child Ochoa had with someone else, and he didn’t abuse her for much of their relationship, she said. “It basically came out of nowhere when he attacked me,” she added.
“It’s definitely one of those American Psycho type of things because it’s like two completely different sides of a person,” she said, referencing the film starring Christian Bale as an investment banker who’s also a calculating serial killer.
When she was told Silva was a suspect in Battaglia’s killing, Ochoa said she hoped he would “have to go away for hopefully the rest of his life.”
“I’m also really sad that this even had to happen in the first place,” she said. “In my opinion, he should’ve gone away to prison when he tried to kill me.”
A former acquaintance of Silva, who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation, recalled disturbing encounters with him, describing him as a “manipulative” person with a sometimes intimidating presence and fiery temper.
Their relationship frayed after he made an alarming sexual overture and openly started using cocaine.
He also had a “collection” of knives and always kept one on him, the acquaintance said. “He’s really, really into knives,” the acquaintance said. “And he talked about them all the time.”
