While protesters wave foreign flags and the mayor plasters political slogans across barricades, the real show unfolds in alleys, train stations, and neighborhoods where people are bleeding, burning, and begging for help.
It’s protest theater at the top, do-nothing politics in the middle, and crime at the ground level. And as Monday proved, the script hasn’t changed. Just more scenes of chaos, no solutions, and no one accountable.
Theater of the Absurd: Crime and Chaos in Real Time
At 4:48 p.m., a White Jeep Cherokee tried to ram police unit 2512 near Fullerton and Laramie before fleeing southbound—no word on arrests. Just another drive-by assault on what’s left of law enforcement authority.
Minutes later, downtown at Clark and Lake, a man was harassing bystanders at the Blue Line. Witnesses said he was “getting into people’s faces,” just steps away from the infamous State and Kinzie construction site where a massive political billboard for Johnson sits.
No trauma counselor on-site.
Just photo-op propaganda.
Up north at 6970 N. Ashland, a woman begged for help removing drug-using squatters and reported the smell of leaking natural gas.
Nobody came.
Back in Humboldt Park, a dog bit someone near Kedzie and Evergreen by “Little Wrigley Field” around 6:11 p.m. The medical call came in—no mention of city services for animal control.
At Sherman Park’s public pool on the South Side, a full-blown fight broke out around 6:51 p.m., another scene of deteriorating public space.
No visible intervention.
Just chaos by the chlorine.
Flags, Filth, and Fire Trucks with Masking Tape
Just after 6:30 p.m., downtown turned into a full-blown farce. On nearly empty streets, small groups waved what appeared to be pro-Iranian flags, clogging traffic around State and Wabash without a clear message or demand.
A few blocks away, a Chicago Fire Department truck rolled by with its unit number made out of masking tape—not covered, but improvised. That detail confirms what rank-and-file first responders have been saying for months: the city’s equipment is falling apart.
Shortages, breakdowns, and neglect are now being patched over with office supplies.
At Clark and Lake, just outside the McDonald’s, a man slumped over in a visible drug haze, swaying in and out of consciousness while pedestrians stepped around him.
No outreach worker. No city presence. Just heat, narcotics, and collapse in the heart of the Loop.
That’s the real downtown theater: flags for show, duct tape for function, and drugs where safety should be—while the mayor’s political signage looms just a block away.
High-Speed Chase Ends in a Downtown Foot Chase
Around 7:00 p.m., a black Dodge Charger with four occupants was spotted driving erratically through downtown Chicago. Reports indicated the suspects might be armed.
The car was found abandoned on Columbus Drive just north of Jackson, parked at an angle across lanes. All four individuals fled on foot into the adjacent park area.
Police conducted an immediate search and were able to apprehend all four suspects shortly after the car was dumped. No information has been released about weapons or charges, but the timing and location—just blocks from tourist foot traffic—underscores the ongoing disorder in the city’s core.
While downtown streets remain clogged with protest signs and political branding, stolen cars with potentially armed suspects continue to race through with little deterrence.
System Failure: From Pellet Guns to Selling Weed to Kids
That same evening, at 5:44 p.m., a man was shot in the chest with what was later identified as a pellet gun in the alley behind the 4100 block of W. 21st Place. CPD initially responded as if it were a live-fire attack. It might as well have been—the victim required EMS transport.
Elsewhere, a man was shot while sitting in his car on the 7900 block of S. Vernon around 1:32 p.m. He survived with a gunshot wound and a chest graze—yet another daylight shooting without suspects in custody.
And in what can only be described as the bottom of the moral barrel, a report came in at 7:42 p.m. of a man allegedly trying to sell marijuana to his 10-year-old daughter at the 95th Street Red Line station. Ten male suspects were reportedly involved. No counselor there either.
Political Signs Instead of Public Safety
The symbolism of the day wasn’t subtle. While citizens wrestled with danger, displacement, and disorder, the mayor’s oversized political signage dominated intersections. At State and Kinzie, one sign reads: “BUILD BETTER TOGETHER – MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON.”
A trash can and caution tape complete the scene.
No help for the woman smelling gas.
No outreach at the Red Line.
No trauma response for the shot man in Lawndale.
But the mayor’s branding is doing just fine.
If Chicago’s public safety is collapsing, at least the taxpayer-funded stage show is still running.
