Two experts say crime is getting worse in Chicago.
One government worker said … it’s one that’s growing … and the other said … the increasing fatality rate in the city of Chicago.
Both spoke on WTTW’s Tuesday Chicago Tonight show, confirming what many street reporters have been saying for months now: violent crime in Chicago is getting worse.
Moderator Brandis Freidman took it to a whole nother level with … what are some of the kind of scary and startling trends that you all have been noticing with regards to cases, fatality rates?
The news is nothing new.
Back in April of this year, the Deputy US Attorney for the Chicago area also said crime was growing while increasing spending and resources to fight violent criminals.
More troubling is the likelihood that a shooting turns into a homicide has increased, wrote two researchers with the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab back in March 2024 in a Tribune Op-Ed titled, We are seeing a lethal shift in America’s gun violence crisis.
The stats say crime is up,
The experts say crime is up,
And it’s called a crisis.
Maybe that is why the City Club of Chicago big shots are having a three-part series called Ending Gun Violence in Chicago: Connecting Policy, Practice and Community.
Today, in Chicago, there is a strong correlation between the flood of illegal guns — almost more than anywhere in the nation — and the volume of gun violence in our communities.
While the Chicago Police Department have made progress in getting guns off the streets — in 2023 CPD recovered more than 12,000 guns for the third consecutive year — that is a drop in the bucket, and the flow of illegal guns continues.
So why do Democratic politicians keep saying that crime is down in Chicago?
Maybe it’s power, maybe it’s money or maybe it’s a brain disease.
The trend is to manipulate statistics to say what is most convenient for the people in power, who want more control.
The problem is that statistics, even when manipulated, never lie.
All statistics show that the trend in violent crime is increasing over time in Chicago, even without adjusting for the decrease in population.
The raw numbers say Chicago is the murder capital of the USA.
The other more disturbing part of this story is people who are doing the hard work in the field are telling the truth while scheming politicians continue to say crime is down … ignoring the victims slaughtered on the streets of Chicago … HiHo

My colleagues, Jacob Miller and Jens Ludwig released some research earlier this year and shed light on the increasing fatality rate in the city of Chicago. So what that means is there are 1000s of shootings every year, some of them are homicides, and the likelihood that a shooting turns into a homicide has increased,” said Kim Smith, director of national programs and external engagement at the University of Chicago Crime Lab. While gun violence declined last year, a closer look at the data reveals a striking and surprising trend. While the total number of shootings is going down, the lethality of shootings — the odds of someone dying in a shooting — seems to be going up. If that trend holds, it could have massive consequences for gun violence in America, with hundreds or thousands more homicides per year. (March 24, 2024)
