CHICAGO, May 16, 2025 — Chicago’s unrelenting wave of violence showed no signs of slowing on Friday, May 16, as the city grappled with a fatal traffic crash and a series of shootings that left one dead and thirteen others wounded across seven separate incidents. From South Side neighborhoods to the West Side, the bloodshed painted a grim picture of a city in crisis, with residents and authorities struggling to stem the tide of violence.
The day began with tragedy at 12:08 p.m. on the 2100 block of S. Ashland in the 12th District, where a 44-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a semi-truck while crossing the street. The impact was devastating, and the man was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Major Accident Investigation Unit (MAIU) Detectives are investigating, but the incident underscored the deadly risks even beyond gunfire in Chicago’s streets.
Ambushed … By mid-afternoon, gunfire erupted in the 13000 block of S. Drexel in the 5th District at 2:20 p.m. A 25-year-old man in a parking lot was shot in the leg by an unknown assailant. He was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition, but the shooter remains at large, with Area Two Detectives investigating the incident.
Triple Shooting … Violence escalated into the evening at 7:26 p.m. on the 9000 block of S. Exchange in the 4th District, where three young men were targeted near a sidewalk. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the ankle and thigh, leaving him in serious condition at Comer Children’s Hospital. An 18-year-old was struck in the back and arm, and a 19-year-old sustained a graze wound to the hand; both were taken to U of C Hospital in good condition. The shooter fled, and area detectives are investigating.
Quad Shooting … The night grew bloodier at 9:06 p.m. on the 600 block of S. Homan in the 11th District, where a dark-colored SUV rolled up on a group of young men at the Citgo Gas station on the corner of Harrison and Homan. An unknown offender inside the vehicle opened fire, unleashing a hail of bullets. Four victims were hit: a 16-year-old shot in the left leg, a 26-year-old struck in the chest and abdomen, and a 24-year-old wounded in the right leg and buttocks—all three were rushed to Mt Sinai and Stroger Hospitals in critical condition. A 23-year-old, shot in the ankle, was taken to Mt Sinai in good condition. No one is in custody, and Area Four Detectives are investigating.
Teenager Shot … Less than an hour later, at 9:47 p.m. on the 10300 block of S. Wentworth in the 5th District, a 17-year-old male driving his car heard a loud noise and felt pain in his right thigh. He drove himself to Roseland Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound and listed in good condition. The teen provided few details, and with no one in custody, Area Two Detectives are working to uncover the circumstances.
Orange Line Bus Drop … Person shot Orange Line 35th and Archer appx 10:35 PM · May 16, 2025. Attendant says it’s dry blood it might have happened somewhere else. Police checked pod cameras and confirmed victim got off a bus and went into the train station to ask for help.
Officer Targeted … At 10:55 p.m. on the 4850 block of S. Drexel in the 2nd District, an off-duty police officer was shot at by an unknown assailant. The officer’s condition remains unknown, and Area Two Detectives are investigating.
Double Shooting … The day’s violence culminated just before midnight at 11:59 p.m. on the 3500 block of W. Fifth Ave in the 11th District. Two men standing outside were approached by a white SUV, from which an unknown offender fired shots. A 35-year-old male was hit multiple times and rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, while a 33-year-old male, shot in the right knee and thigh, was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in fair condition. The shooter fled, and Area Four Detectives are investigating.
