These schools were to be held accountable for test score performance through 5-year contracts while following one of three governance structures: charter, contract, or performance.

I grew up in this part of town in the 70’s. It was beautiful then.
It’s truly heartbreaking to see the sad and disheartening demise of the once great SouthSide of Chicago.
It’s like looking at a lost city. A ghost town. The lifeless ruins of what once was a bustling black metropolis. An important and vital corridor of commercial activity, with churches, schools, community centers. A cornucopia of businesses, retail shopping, fabric stores, restaurants, record shops, beauty salons and movie theaters. All gone. Erased without a trace of the rhythm of life, and the sounds of music that once pulsated up and down Ashland from 95th street to 87th, to 79th and on up to the 63rd and Ashland Green Line El Station.
This was my stomping ground as a kid. Piano Lessons, Ice Cream Parlors, Boy Scouts, Candy Shops, Bakeries, Roller Skating at Saint Sabina, and Block Parties with Dance Contests and Ice Cream Socials. Gone, and completely forgotten by almost everyone.
We moved to Chicago in 1969 when I was 5 yrs old.. My mother was a very popular beautician, and owned The Classic Beauty Salon at 8004 S. Ashland for 40 years. When we moved to 1504 west 81st street, we were the first black family in the building. The landlord was a very strict German lady, and only rented our one bedroom apartment to my Mother, because she was pretty, had a light complexion and long straightened hair. I went to school at Timothy Lutheran School at 83rd and Hermitage.
We attended two churches. One Black. One White.
Providence Baptist Church, ( The big church with the steepleat 84th & Ashland, where I sang my first solo in the gospel choir) and Timothy Lutheran, where I attended 4th-8th grade, was taught by strict, and borderline cruel German teachers, and disciplinarians and became a Boy Scout. In 1979, I graduated 8th grade at Timothy. There were 15 students in that graduating class, the largest in the school’s history.
The neighborhood was a vital and safe place to grow up. In the summertime, kids wandered freely from house to house, street to street, park to park and all ran home, when the street lights came on at 9pm. I graduated from Luther High School South at 87th and Kedzie in 1980.
Carl Lewis, the Olympian Gold Medalist Track & Field runner came from LHSS.
That once prestigious school, populated by the children of the city’s most sophisticated and well connected black families, and also the conservative and strict old-school German-American families of Beverly and Marquette Park, has since been torn down.
It is now a tragic example of the failure of our educational system, municipal and government bureaucracy, and a diabolical, calculated neglect upon the very people of color who gave Chicago part of it’s soul and undeniable character.
Thank you for highlighting the blight that has tarnished the once amazing Ashland Avenue.
