SubX.News® Street Report – April 20, 2026
Chicago’s spring construction season opened with a promise: “wolf pack” crews swarming the city’s worst potholes to deliver rapid, visible repairs.
Hours after those assurances went out over local media, the streets told a different story.
A heavy fire response built in the South Loop just before 4:45 p.m. on April 20, 2026 at 40 East 9th Street, with engines and trucks lining Wabash and Ninth as crews moved into a high-rise at Burnham Park Place.
From the street there were no visible flames and no rescues—just a full alarm posture forming in real time, and several rigs carrying taped-on temporary numbers instead of standard markings.
Radio traffic later confirmed a contained kitchen fire, quickly brought under control.
Firefighters handled it quickly and professionally, even with aging equipment and temporary rigs.
No media spin—just regular workers doing what they are supposed to do.
All of it unfolded in real time—on the street and over the scanner.
A few blocks northwest of the South Loop fire response, the lack of urgency could be seen without question.
The intersection of Wells and Jackson was effectively 100% vacant, with three of four corners dark and shuttered.
In the center of the Loop, during what should be the tail end of the business day, there was little movement, little retail, and no sense of sustained activity.
The only constant presence was institutional, not commercial, reinforcing the gap between official claims of recovery and what the street actually showed.
What was present was the smell of weed.
At the same time, details of an earlier incident came directly from the source.
On Friday, April 17, Whitney Young High School Principal Rickey Harris described on his own Facebook page how his vehicle was struck by more than ten rounds near 95th and Throop in Washington Heights.
Posting photos of the damage, he wrote that the shots shattered windows and pierced the doors, adding,
By all accounts, this should have ended differently. But God.
He walked away without a scratch.
No weapon formed against me shall prosper!!
Wolves were attacking the streets—blasted across the radio as the mayor and transportation officials promoted an aggressive pothole campaign.
The excuse list was ready: winter, rain, and a transportation department that went more than nine months without a permanent commissioner after Tom Carney’s July 2025 departure.
The pitch was simple—more cones, more crews, and a rebranded “wolf pack” fix.
The inbound route from Lake Shore Drive to Wacker provided a live test of that claim.
One high-profile pothole—already making the rounds online—had been freshly patched in a perfect, camera-ready spot. The repair was rough, with loose gravel and debris left behind.
Just feet away, the street fell apart.
Within 20 feet, multiple deep potholes sat untouched in the same lane. Another stretch revealed more craters, some cutting inches into the pavement as cars slammed through them. In less than half a block, drivers went from smooth patch to broken road.
From the street, it wasn’t a sweep—it was a show.
One hole fixed for the cameras, the rest left behind.
From there, the conditions shifted again.
Near Ida B. Wells and State, the edges of downtown showed a different kind of buildup—cardboard, debris, and makeshift setups lining the street.
What once looked temporary now felt settled in, pressing closer to the core.
Farther along, the scale became clearer.
Resources were visible—tents, supplies, outreach—but so was the footprint.
What was being built wasn’t just relief, it was structure, expanding block by block.
By the time the route reached 23rd and Halsted, the street economy was fully in the open.
Drug activity moved in plain view near the shelter and bus stops, with known faces cycling through the same corner.
No visible enforcement stepped in. The transactions continued, uninterrupted, part of a system that had settled into place.
As the sun dropped over the city, the pattern held.
Across a single afternoon and evening, the same story repeated—selective fixes, empty corridors, and open-air activity operating side by side.
Public messaging spoke of coordinated road repairs, revived economic activity, and compassionate outreach.
The street showed something else.
No media spin—just what was there.
Duct-taped fire trucks.

Friday night, I was caught in a random shooting while driving home. Yes, I was in the car! Looking at my car, it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that I’m here to tell the story. But GOD….
As you can see in the photos, there are over 10 gunshots concentrated on the passenger side—shattering windows and piercing the doors. By all accounts naturally, this should have ended differently.
But GOD….
Friday night I lived God’s protection. Not a single scratch. Not a single injury. Just a heart full of gratitude and a spirit that is forever changed.
“No weapon formed against me shall prosper!!”
If you’ve been looking for a sign to believe, or if you’ve been doubting that God IS REAL—let this be your sign.
I’m hugged a little tighter today, praying a little harder, and thanking God a little more than yesterday for the hedge of protection that stayed with me on that road. Life is fragile, but His grace is solid and promises are true!
