(Chicago) SubXNews Weekend Crime Reality Check – September 19–22, 2025
Chicago logged 27 people shot, 4 of them killed over the Sept 19–21 weekend. That includes the West Loop homicide at Halsted, the 8-year-old girl shot in Auburn Gresham, and mass-style shootings from Garfield Park to Little Village.
By Monday, the violence hadn’t slowed — three more people were shot in Garfield Park, Auburn Gresham, and Park Manor before midday on Sept 22.
On paper the weekend looks “better” than last year — in 2024 this same stretch saw 6 killed and 34 wounded. But stack 2025 against the broader picture and the narrative that “crime is down” doesn’t hold. This year’s 27 shot sits right in line with the 10-year weekend average (6 killed, 32 wounded).
The body count is below the pandemic peaks of 2020–2022, when 10–12 were murdered on this weekend, but it’s still well above pre-COVID lows like 2019 (2 killed, 18 wounded) and 2015 (3 killed, 13 wounded).
Last year, the same weekend saw 40 victims, and in 2021 the weekend recorded a staggering 72 victims. But this year’s count outpaces the pre-COVID totals of 20 in 2019, 21 in 2018, and 16 in 2015, according to HeyJackass, a site that tracks Chicago violence using official and open-source data.
And that’s before adjusting for the fact that Chicago today has fewer people and fewer businesses than before the pandemic.
Proportionally, the violence is worse.
On top of that, the city shut off ShotSpotter a year ago, wiping out a whole layer of gunfire detection. That means the official stats we do see now are actually catching less of the crime than in previous years.
City Hall insists there’s a “program” and a “plan.”
The Mayor repeats the script, but those words don’t square with four murders in three days, a child shot, and shootings rolling right into Monday.
Even more damaging, one of the so-called “violence interrupters” — touted by the administration and even photographed alongside the Governor — now faces his own murder charge, story broke by @CWBChicago
That’s not progress; that’s a credibility crisis.
So yes, the official line points to “progress,” but the reality is more grim: 30 people shot in four days, four dead, with fewer residents, fewer businesses, and less data.
Crime isn’t gone, it isn’t solved, and it isn’t “down” in any meaningful sense for the people living it on the ground.
