Chicago boiled over. Not just with heat, but with violence, death, and disorder. From the first sirens before dawn to the last gunshots before midnight, the city endured one of the most chaotic 24-hour periods in recent memory—its institutions absent, its politicians posturing, its streets bleeding.
The day began with death and ended with tow trucks dragging tourists while gangs ran loose downtown. Nothing worked, no one responded, and the heat only made it worse.
It started with two bodies on the West Side. Just after 2:30 a.m., three people were gunned down on Roosevelt Road near Ogden. A black SUV pulled up, three gunmen got out, and opened fire.
Twenty-four-year-old Malik and twenty-three-year-old Dennishiana were both pronounced dead at Stroger. A third man took a bullet to the ankle. Another mass shooting, another set of names for the city to forget.
Minutes later, near Addison on Lake Shore Drive, a 26-year-old man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Just north, near 3600 N LSD, another male was found unresponsive on the ground and pronounced dead. Same night. Same city. Same silence.
By 5:24 a.m., another man was shot in the shoulder near 93rd and Eberhart. Less than two hours later, two more men were hit on the 3600 block of W 5th. They made it to Stroger with multiple gunshot wounds, while CPD marked shell casings and moved on.
At 1:40 p.m., a car flipped into a building on Cicero Avenue. And then the sky started to burn.
The heat index hit 103°F.
The National Weather Service told people to stay indoors and drink water. Meanwhile, the scanner cracked with reports of wrecks on Lake Shore Drive, boats crashing off Oak Street Beach, and a pontoon captain disappearing into the lake after diving for gas.
By midafternoon, marine distress calls stacked up. A disabled boat off 63rd. Someone in the water by Navy Pier. Then at Roosevelt Green Line, a fight broke out—knife versus skateboard. Minutes later, at Clark and Lake, a man with a knife chased people through traffic. There were no officers on scene.
Downtown, it was worse. At Ohio and St. Clair, the same known dealer stood in front of 7-Eleven like he owned it. Tourists wandered past the smell of weed and sirens. And then the robberies started.
A crew of armed robbers hit the CTA Blue Line and fled into the Loop. Officers chased them as women on a boat in the Playpen screamed for help. One man was shot at 732 S Financial—stomach wound, surgery, and another downtown crime scene. Within minutes, three suspects were caught by Palmer House. One fled.
By 5:29 p.m., all four were in custody—but the victim refused to press charges. CPD shrugged. They’ll be charged with something.
As that played out, County sheriffs—not CPD—were pulling over cars at State and Madison. While illegal parkers filled Lakeshore medians, tow trucks were targeting out-of-town plates near Millennium Park. The city ignored ATV crews rolling from Rainbow Beach to River North—but made sure tourists got fined.
At 5:28 p.m., an 11-year-old boy was shot in the back at a park on S Tripp Avenue. He survived. Just before that, a 33-year-old man was shot in the leg on S Western. And around the same time, a 27-year-old woman was pulled from the water near Grand Avenue, pronounced dead at Northwestern. Another drowning. Another body.
By sunset, it only got worse.
Jet skis began sinking off Navy Pier. A man with a gun and women’s underwear in a white van was reported at LaSalle and Wells. Gamblers loitered at 69th Red Line while SWAT rolled to W 90th where a man threatened to detonate a grenade.
At North Avenue Beach, cops begged for backup all day and were ignored. Meanwhile, tow trucks worked overtime ticketing legally parked visitors while letting 25 illegally parked vehicles clog the median on LSD.
Anarcho-terrorism, but with citations.
By 9 p.m., Robbins PD asked for help dispersing crowds in the housing projects. Blue Line power was cut at Halsted. The Orange Line saw another fight.
And then the news broke—Israel, with U.S. coordination, had bombed Iran’s nuclear sites. A global flashpoint dropped while Chicago couldn’t even handle its own beaches.
Another man was shot at 2221 W 54th. Another at 9700 S Commercial. Another at 12000 S Harvard. And finally, two teenagers hit at 8000 S Ingleside—one 17, one 18. Both shot in the leg.
At 11:45 p.m., the final update said it all:
Cops don’t have any authority in Chicago. You can pretty much do anything—except park legally in a tourist area.
A full day of unchecked violence, half a dozen shootings, marine fatalities, transit shutdowns, and bureaucratic dysfunction.
And still, no statement from the mayor.
No presence from the city’s leadership.
Just tweets about staying cool and being kind.
The whole day boiled over into one surreal truth:
There are no rules anymore. You can do whatever you want in Chicago—except park legally downtown.

Chicago police are seeking witnesses to aid in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash on Lake Shore Drive in Lakeview early Saturday morning.
Police and fire personnel responded to reports of an accident and a person down in the northbound lanes around 3:34 a.m. They found a 26-year-old man in the street about a block north of Addison. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
