“It was a dream come true to play varsity as a freshman,” said Tate, who began his youth football career as a quarterback before moving to running back, defensive back and finally receiver in eighth grade.
Tate signed a letter of intent with Ohio State in December of 2022 and enrolled in the school in January.
Tate’s father played linebacker at Alabama A&M.
Ashley Griggs—the mother of Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate—was shot and killed Sunday in the West Garfield Park area of Chicago, the university confirmed in a statement.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” the statement read. “Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.”
WGN said Andrew Holmes, a Chicago community activist, identified Griggs as Tate’s mother. Tate attended Marist High School in Chicago before finishing his prep career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Chicago police said Area 4 detectives were still investigating as of Sunday night. No one had been taken into custody.
Tate enrolled at OSU in January as one of the nation’s top incoming freshman receivers. He was a four-star prospect ranked No. 59 per the 247 Sports composite. He quickly emerged as one of the class’ top performers this past spring. He caught a 37-yard touchdown from Kyle McCord in the spring game.
On July 13, Griggs posted a link to her son’s No. 17 jersey in the OSU team store on Twitter, saying “The wait is finally over.”
